Students from Guanajuato Mexico-Helping Babies Breathe

by Jim and Lisa Hulse

The Guanajuato workshop was a collaborative teaching effort by Marilyn Gran-Moravec, Ginnie Kim, Lisa Hulse, and two OHSU nursing students, Daniella Juarez-Rodriguez and Ana Marquez. This was the third offering of the Helping Babies Breathe class in Ashland. Truly a collaborative effort bringing together representatives of four university programs and PRN. The University of Guanajuato Nursing Program, The OHSU Klamath Falls Nursing Program, The OHSU Ashland Nursing Program, The Oregon Institute of Technology Respiratory Care Program and PRN.

Eight nursing students from Guanajuato attended the workshop. The workshop provided the students with an excellent opportunity to practice the important newborn resuscitation skills

while also learning English. Even though many of the students had been exposed to a program similar to the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, they enjoyed learning HBB because it teaches the prioritization needed in the event that one may need to manage a birth when resources are not available.

The educators were impressed by the interest and knowledge that the students brought to the class and we enjoyed learning more about nursing practices in Guanajuato.
